Kimberley cattle owner postpones shooting cattle

The owner of a Kimberley cattle station in Western Australia says he's postponing shooting up to 3,000 head.

Nico Botha from Moola Bulla Station near Halls Creek says he will have to shoot some of his cattle, because of the ban on live cattle exports to Indonesia.

Mr Botha says his team was going to start shooting animals today, but has postponed that after a bombardment of media requests.

Mr Botha has told ABC Rural he will not be killing cattle in front of any media and it wasn't his intention to cause a "media circus."

He says cattle numbers on his station do need to be reduced to stop overgrazing and to meet the stocking rate conditions made clear to his company when they purchased Moola Bulla late last year.

He says he will conduct the cull but at a time that suits him, and when no media is present.

"We have to reduce the numbers on this station somehow and for the future of our property we have to do it, we have no other option," he said.

The RSPCA has responded saying, "There are other options available to this producer rather than shooting his cattle - namely the government and industry assistance fund.

Federal Agricultural Minister Joe Ludwig has told the Senate there's emergency funding that can be accessed by the cattle station.

"My office asked the ABC for the contact details for Mr Botha so that we can see what assistance we can provide to him."

Mr Botha admits he hasn't contacted Centrelink, but says the cost of destocking will cost a lot more than the $25,000 on offer from the Commonwealth.

Some live export shipments on the horizon

The live export trade is continuing into other markets, with a boat leaving Broome this week for Egypt, and another leaving Port Hedland in a couple of weeks bound for Israel.

Livestock agent Andrew Stewart is hopeful of an increase number of shipments to the Middle East this year.

"All exporters are obviously looking for other opportunities, because they've got boats just sitting there costing them a lot of money, so it's in their interest as well to find alternative markets.
