Bearing the heat and rain to celebrate the 4th of July

ST. LOUIS • A drenching thunderstorm prompted organizers to pull the plug on Fair St. Louis events Sunday afternoon.
The decision to cancel the air show in the afternoon, the evening concert by Grammy Maroon 5 and pop group the fireworks night deflated the spirits of hundreds of visitors, many of which were still milling around the Gateway Arch grounds hours after the events were canceled.
Gladys Swimming, Southwest County Saint Louis, had brought her daughter and four downtown to see teenagers Maroon 5.
"They were pretty disappointed," Nager said.
Jerel and Casey Klindworth of Tamoroa, Illinois, led about 80 miles to visit friends in St. Louis and see the concert and fireworks.
"I was hoping they would have handled it better," Jerel Klindworth said of the decision to suspend events about 4 p.m. and later declare the fair a washout for the day.
But he conceded that he didn't know how an earlier decision might have been made. He hoped that the fireworks would go off as planned tonight.
Organizers said the festival would resume at 11 today with no changes in the schedule.
"We are now focusing on having a great Fourth of July celebration with Montgomery Gentry," Bob Schenk, chairman the Fair Saint Louis Public Relations Committee, said in announcing Sunday's cancellations.
Montgomery Gentry, a country duo, will take the stage at 8 tonight.
The National Weather Service reported that Sunday's storm dropped more than 2 inches of rain in parts of the region. At Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, 1.55 inches was recorded from 4 to 7 p.m.
If there was an upside to the deluge, it was that temperatures that had soared to 90 Sunday dropped into the 70s later.
Early in the day, fairgoers said contending with the heat was the big issue but well worth weathering for an event that regularly ranks as one of the nation's largest Independence Day celebrations.
"You got to be here for Fourth of July," said Jackie Kohler, 74, of Hazelwood, who has been attending the fair since she was a child. "It's patriotic. Everyone is down here.
