The King and His Court returning to Shelby County

The King and His Court, a 4-man softball team created in 1946, will make a stop in Shelby County as part of their Farewell Tour on July 16 at Spain Park High School.

The 4-man team, in its 65th season, will face off against the cast of Lizard Lick Towing on the nationally-televised show All Worked Up on TruTV in an exhibition contest at 7 p.m. at the Spain Park softball complex.

The King and His Court are billed as America’s No. 1 family softball entertainment and raises funds for youth organizations, military bases, church groups, civic organizations and entire communities. The King and His Court have made only one previous appearance in Shelby County, when the traveling team came to Buck Creek Park in 1993.

Games involving the King and His Court feature stunt pitches, feats of athletic talent and crowd pleasing comedic routines. The team features pitcher Rich Hoppe of Burbank, Calif., catcher Charlie Dobbins of Raleigh, N.C., first baseman Mike Branchaud of Ontario, Canada and shortstop Ron Davenport of Raleigh, N.C.

Event organizer Larry Martin is currently seeking two fast-pitch softball umpires, a bugle player, a fast-pitch pitcher, as well as corporate sponsors for the event.

The East Bay Elite softball team will be hosting a performance by the King & His Court , Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bristol Town Beach Sports Complex, located next to Colt State Park in Bristol.

Started in 1946 by pitcher Eddie Feigner, the King & His Court is a four-man team - consisting of a pitcher (Rich Hoppe), catcher (Charlie Dobbins), first baseman (Mike Branchaud) and shortstop (Ron Davenport) - that over the past 65 years has performed in 104 countries and a total of 4,000 cities in such venues as Yankee Stadium, beside the Great Wall of China and on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

The Bristol appearance will be one of the final stops for the King & His Court, which has announced that it is making its farewell tour.

Tickets, which cost $10, can be purchased at the gate with a portion of all ticket sales benefiting the Bristol Youth Softball and Men's League.
