Straight talk on energy storage
In a white paper presented at the headquarters of the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) Tuesday, Southern California Edison (SCE) delivered some clear points about a subject that needs clarity: energy storage.
" Moving Energy Storage from Concept to Reality: Southern California Edison's Approach to Evaluating Energy Storage " admirably cuts the fog. Here are just a handful of points from the paper.
The power industry's unique need to instantaneously match supply and demand has conjured the notion of storage as the "holy grail," of course, but as the SCE white paper pointed out "uncertainties concerning feasible uses, valuation methods and ultimate cost-effectiveness remain, impeding informed decision-making."
In the fog-clearing department, a few statements:
"energy storage" as a unified concept underestimates its complexity the variety of potential, storage-related applications and technologies (chemical, thermal, mechanical) complicates meaningful economic comparisons vendors seek direction from potential buyers, including utilities, on value propositions and technical needs, while utilities "traditionally require upfront project parameters to analyze in the context of existing infrastructure"
Thus SCE's application-focused valuation methodology, contained in the above-referenced paper. SCE developed a four-step process that may be summarized as follows:
first identify discrete operational uses where storage could theoretically be deployed along the value chain taking those operational uses as building blocks, SCE developed specific, practical applications—a bundling of potential operational uses across the value chain as a function of physical location and operating profile; SCE arrived at a dozen match each application with technology options, their capabilities, costs and commercial availability assess the application-technology pairs for economic viability and technical feasibility
The paper's executive summary gives clear-cut graphical figures on potential operational uses, applications and examples of application evaluations. The operational uses span generation to end-user, each defined by duration of storage output. The applications, meanwhile, range the familiar gamut from time shifting intermittent renewable resources to ancillary services to uninterruptible power supply provision.
One conclusion, in addition to the point that the process should be application-driven, rather than technology-driven: "storage application evaluations should identify a specific location and system/portfolio circumstance, which together provide the foundation for relevant benefit stream calculations.

Presenting an Executive summary of your Business Plan | SME ...
The executive summary is one of the most important section of your business plan. It provides a concise overview of the entire plan, along with a history of your company. The executive summary is what most readers will read first. If it is not good, it may be the last thing they read about your company. Also, most business plan developers leave the writing of the executive summary until the end. Financiers in particular read executive summaries before looking at the rest of a plan to determine whether or not they want to learn more or provide financial assistance for a business. Other readers will also go first to your executive summary to get a good picture of your business and to gauge your professionalism and the viability of your business. Your executive summary should be brief and include your business concept, financial features, current state of your business, location, date of establishment, principal owners and key personnel, and major achievements.
