Pop Warner program plans golf outing and races

VALPARAISO | Valpo Pop Warner is pleased to kick off its 2011 season with a fun-filled weekend of festivities starting with the Sixth Annual Valpo Pop Warner Golf Outing on Aug. 6 at Forest Park Golf Course.

Check in begins at noon, with food served at 1 p.m. and a shotgun start at 2. Awards will be given for longest drive, hole-in-one, closest to the pin, and longest putt contests. A raffle and silent auction will also take place. Items up for bidding will be awarded during the post-outing party.

Registration fee is $70 per player or $280 per foursome. To participate or sponsor, download a registration form at www.vpwls.org .

Continuing the celebration, VPW will introduce its inaugural 1st Down & 5K to Go Valpo Pop Warner Touchdown Trot at 8 a.m. Aug. 7. This fundraiser offers a way to stay involved in the community and enjoy an early morning run.

Along with a 5K run, there will be a 3K fun run/walk and a "I Golfed, I Sipped, I Shuffle" 100-yard dash (all races are stroller friendly).

The family-friendly fun will continue after the race with a Tailgate Party that includes a DJ, face painting, balloon artistry, plenty of food, and more.

The races will start and finish at Valparaiso High School. Race day registration and packet pick-up will take place at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 7. The 5K will begin at 8, the 3K at 8:20 and the dash at 8:45.

There are two easy ways to register, online at www.vpwls.org or www.signmeup.com/76825.

Register on or before July 22 and receive a free wicking shirt, with entries fees $28 for the 5K, $20 for the 3K Fun Run/Walk and $10 for the 100-yard dash.

Register after July 22, with no guarantee of a shirt, at  a cost of $32 for the 5K, $25 for the 3K Fun Run/Walk, $12 for the 100-yard dash, and $7 for the Diaper Derby.

All proceeds from the golf outing and race will benefit Valparaiso Pop Warner. Fundraising allows VPW to generate dollars essential for providing a quality sports program to the youth in the entire Valparaiso community, regardless of their ability to pay.

The 12th Riddell National Bank Brazil Open will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 2-3, at the Forest Park Golf Course.

The tourney is open to professionals, amateurs, ladies and there is also an open division, a senior division (ages 50-64), super senior division (65-older), and boys' and girls' divisions.

The tournament will be flighted following the first day for amateurs and seniors. Juniors will play in age groups.

Cost is $50 for amateurs and seniors (which includes cart), $30 for juniors and $75 for professionals.

A silent auction has been scheduled to take place during the tourney this year.

The open champion will earn $750 (cash for professionals, merchandise for amateurs). In addition, there is a $200 bonus for low pro and am combination.

Trophies will be awarded for the winning juniors and all juniors will receive a Brazil Open T-shirt.

Anyone who scores a hole-in-one during the tournament will earn $10,000.

Entries paid before June 26 will receive a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.

The entry fee also includes a barbecue lunch from Pappy's Sunday, July 3.

Optimist Golf Tournament

The Clay County Optimist Junior Golf Tournament will take place Monday, July 25, at the Forest Park Golf Course.

A shotgun start has been scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

There are three age groups for boys, including 13-under (red tees), 14-15 (gold tees) and 16-18 (white tees). In addition, there are two age groups for girls, including 14-15 (red tees) and 16-18 (red tees).

Entry fee is $20 per player, which includes a meal. Adults who wish to eat will be charged an additional $5.

Forms are available at the golf course and will run in The Brazil Times.
