Subway's Platform: CMO Tony Pace Talks Sports, CBAs, Sandwiches

; A partnership with Little League Baseball; and as an “official training partner” of the ING NYC Marathon.

Tony Pace, who has been svp/CMO of the Subway Franchise Advertising Fund Trust since January 2006, met with TheBigLead.com at a Subway Restaurant in New York City [one of nearly 35,000 locations in 98 countries] to discuss Michael Phelps, Apolo Ohno (pictured), Blake Griffin, Green Lantern Tony Pace: It’s not the only thing we do. That [strategy] continues to be viable for us. But it has to be genuine. The [athletes] we work with have to be fans of Subway.I'll have a gazillion people reach out to me is usually an agent, and they will say: My guy or gal like Subway. [They] want to support your business. My first question is: 'What is their favorite slot? " If they go, "Uh. . . Uh. . . tuna. . ". I will say, "Not really interested." But when they can recite in detail what they eat, I'll listen.

A good example: [Before we signed] Blake Griffin, he described his favorite sandwich, and I knew he was sincere. He also told me he eats at places underground in the cities of many NBA. I did not check that. [Laughs.] But he’s an honest guy.

TBL: Michael Phelps is among the athletes aligned with Subway. What was the reaction at Subway when the photo of him using using drug paraphernalia was published in 2009? TP: I was particularly disappointed that other brands involved with Michael felt compelled to say they were dropping him. Like Kellogg. Which was B.S. because their deal with him was ending anyway. ESPN was reporting that Subway had dropped Michael. Which wasn’t true. So I told our PR guys to send out a statement [clarifying our position]. I still believe [that supporting Phelps] was the right thing to do.

TBL: Will Phelps be featured more in Subway marketing as the 2012 Summer Olympics get closer? TP: Certainly. He’s still iconic. His ratings are still very high. There was definitely a dip in March-April of 2009, But it came back up. At the end of the day, we believe in being involved full-time, not just when everyone else is paying attention. We are about training and not just the actual competition. So we have been supporting Michael even when the cameras are not there.

BEIJING – After overtaking McDonald’s Corporation in the number of its outlets globally, US fast food giant Subway now aims to more than double the figure in China over the next five years.

It also wants to become more localized, capitalizing on China’s huge urbanization program and the fast-growing catering industry.

The sandwich maker currently has 220 stores in China and 73 in Beijing. “By the end of this year, we expect to have more than 90 stores in Beijing and nearly 300 in China. In 2015, there will be 180 stores in Beijing and over 600 stores in China, "said Alexander Moody-Stuart, general agent for Subway franchise in Beijing.

"The total turnover of sales for Subway in Beijing has increased by over 40 percent year on year in 2010 and we expect to see similar growth rate to continue over the next two years," said Moody- Stuart.

According to the agent, sales subway in Beijing has increased an average of 25 percent over the past five years.

The US-based franchise brand started its business in China in 1995 with a few stores targeting areas with lots of foreigners. The brand began to grow more quickly from 2004, said Moody-Stuart, who was an accountant in London before becoming a Subway agent for Beijing in 2006.

Subway has become very popular among many Beijing office staff. According to Luo Tian, a saleswoman in Beijing’s Yinghua Dongjie store, she usually sells 200 sandwiches every Wednesday lunchtime, when the shop offers a “buy one, get one free” service. “People queue several meters outside the doors,” she said.

The outlets, which make sandwiches to order, attract many people who like to see their meal prepared in front of them from a diversity of ingredients and who can choose to eat in or take it away. Its biggest sales occur at lunchtime, according to Moody-Stuart. As a result, most Subway stores in Beijing are located near office buildings. However, he said the company also has some profitable loctions in shopping malls, outlet concessions, near universities, at travel depots and tourist spots such as the Great Wall.

“We also plan to open our first drive-through locations,” Moody-Stuart added.

Data from Subway shows that the most favored sandwich in China is tuna. Moody-Stuart said the franchise is going to launch more local flavors this year but the core menu will stay the same.
