Ken Russell and The Female Form
The direction of the film Ken embrace all forms of women lining. His actresses have not a look or body type. Having been a fan of the aesthetics of Russ Meyer (preferably massive natural tits, a tiny waist and hips about ten inches wider than the size, but not wider or as wide as the chest) I'm definitely converted much less rigid standards of Ken. Make no mistake, he has high standards that all directors male to female beauty, but Ken respects the individuality of the actor's physical (as well as a working tool such as voice), rather than forcing every woman in an inflexible, prescribed archetype. Ken Russell's lead actress usually have extensive dance training (many of the extras in his films are classically trained ballerinas or move like them) and are required to dance in some capacity. Many walk, run, fight and dance naked too. And despite purposefully shooting Glenda Jackson's topless scenes when she was further along in her first pregnancy, unlike the rest of western civilization, Ken Russell does not put a premium on big breasts. Helen Mirren, though not a dancer, appears equally as gracefully as the human ascending and descending nude in "Savage Messiah" who strikes one deliciously figure flattering pose after another.
Welcome! My name is Amanda and from July 3rd 2011 until July 3rd 2012, I am blogging every single day about the life and work of British film maker Ken Russell. Anyone can comment. All are welcome. Ken Russell fans and detractors alike, please chime in. If you are new to Ken Russell then you are severely parched of cultural literacy and must drink here. As in my profile portrait, I plan to enter the forest, enjoy the music and loosen nuts.
"We all see film differently. Memory also has a tendency to re-edit, re-shoot and even re-dub. A line like 'Play it again , Sam', even when the original dialogue is known to be different identifies Casablanca immediately. So if you should find within these pages any descriptions that conflict with the facts, they are that way, because that's how I remember them."
