Allawi denials aside, when I spoke to a former CIA officer with extensive experience in the Middle East, far from pooh-poohing the idea he had this to say: "This is being discussed in Washington . A scenario is, the Iraqis do it themselves, an Iraqi colonel was sick of it all, taking the country. And should the United States 48 hours to learn how to react, and in the meantime, he took on everything. The other side of the coin is that we do ourselves. Find a place in general in Ramadi and elsewhere, and help take over. And he’d declare a state of emergency and crack down. And he’d ask us to leave — that would be our exit strategy. It’s a distinct possibility. I’ve raised this with a number of foreign service and intelligence people, and most of them — remembering the days of the coups d’état in the Middle East — say, ‘Hear, hear!’

“And you know what? I think Rumsfeld would jump on this idea in five minutes. “Of course, no coup will happen at all — no general or colonel would dare try -– without, at the very least, a wink and a nod from the CIA, the U.S. military, or Ambassador Khalilzad. And most likely, it would take significantly more than a wink, something like explicit support and promises of assistance. But, according to my reporting, that is precisely what is being discussed in Washington, even among the inner councils of James Baker’s Iraq Study Group, the realist (that is, anti-neoconservative) commission set up last spring to figure out what to do about Iraq.

So reports (speculatively) Robert Dreyfuss. Mm, shit sandwich – tasty! Tens of thousands of American troops dead or maimed, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead or maimed, to swap juntas. But don’t worry, this one will be “an ally.” How do we know? Because what could go wrong? And that thesis that “Middle Eastern tyranny produces terrorism?” Listen, Buster: If we stop talking about it, you stop talking about it.

Wars of abstraction never end, they just fade away – in this case I say the sooner the better. The fortunes of the Repubs in the intermediate term seem to be tied to the extent of tacit conventional acceptance of the notion of a war on terror. Even the punch line of this post implicitly levers off of it. If the Dems do get control of something in November I suspect that they’ll continue to breathe life into their own version of the war on terror as an organizing principle for a while. How long do you folks think it will be until you wake up one day and realize that the war on terror is over even though there was never an official ceremony?
