Online College Grants from the GovernmentIt is important to become familiar with all the online college grants offered by the federal government.
To get started, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will put you in position to receive several types of aid, including grants.
Here are five of the best online school grants:
1. Federal Pell Grant . This is the most common type of grant from the federal government. It is awarded based on financial need.
2. Academic Competitiveness Grant. Are you a freshman or sophomore in college? Do you have a history of success in the classroom? If you have at least a 3.0 GPA you can qualify for up to $750 in your first year and $1,300 in your second year.
3. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. Do you need more than just a Pell Grant? If so, and you qualify based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), you can receive this grant. These grants are available at more than 4,000 colleges and universities. Only the neediest students receive the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, which can be between $100 and $4,000 per academic year.
4. National SMART Grant. Are you in your last two years of undergraduate school? Are you interested in math, technology, engineering, life sciences, or a foreign language? If so, you may qualify for the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant which awards up to $4,000 per year.
5. Federal TEACH Grant. This is also known as the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant. It is reserved for students who want to be teachers. To qualify, you are required to keep a GPA of at least 3.24. Also, students must agree to teach in a low-income school for four years upon graduating. With the ability to receive up to $4,000 per year, this is a tradeoff you may be willing to make.
In addition to federal government grants, check with your state government to see if they offer online college grants. Also, many third party organizations, both private and public, award grants on a regular basis.
