Surf & Piers

Surf temperatures had hit 80 degrees, but it's dipped to 75 degrees. A lot of jellyfish are around, and there have been a few days recently with thick mist rolling in off the ocean.

Despite all the signs of a cold-water upwelling, Gene Lytwyn at the Fishin' Hole (386-252-9804) said he hasn't heard any talk about it from surf anglers.

"It's been fairly quiet," he said. "I have had quite a few people say they've been releasing guitarfish in the surf."

Lytwyn said it's mostly been whiting and "real small" pompano, and the Main Street Pier has had small flounder and drum.

Rhonda Nelson at the Sun Glow Pier (386-788-4035, sunglowpier.com) said anglers are getting whiting, black drum, small flounder, plus some small black tip and bonnethead sharks.

Offshore

A few miles off the beach, people are chasing bait pods and picking up tarpon, jacks and king mackerel, Lytwyn said. There have even been reports of cobia still being caught.

Lytwyn said some guys are launching kayaks off the beach and getting into kings and tarpon pretty close to shore.

And Lytwyn said he is hearing talk that red snapper are showing up inside of 3 miles from shore, state waters where there is no ban on keeping the fish.

"The summer months are when they come inshore to spawn," he said. "There's a few shrimp boat wrecks and other small structures on the bottom inshore in state waters."

Ponce Inlet

The inshore and channel area has been slow, said Chaz Cecil at Cecil's Bait & Tackle (386-428-2841, cecilsbaitandtackle.com). Sharks, blues, ladyfish and jacks have been about the sum of the action, he said.

Mosquito Lagoon & Indian River Lagoon

Trout have been hungry and big, with daily limits and fish up to 8 pounds, and redfish are also eating well early in the day, said Capt. Denny Mialki (386-299-4355, shallowwaterfishingguide.com).

But by around 11 a.m., the bite shuts down, he said.

"Find an edge and start fishing," he said.

Mialki is targeting edges with drop-offs from 1- to 5-foot depths, like the edge of Georges Bar and Tiger Shoals and around the Clinker Islands.

Mialki said he has been looking for small pods of a half-dozen fish because they seem more willing to strike than fish in the big schools attracting lots of pressure. And he also said he has been fishing the tidal northern end of the lagoon because it has had slightly cooler water.

We have recently had rats in our basement eating everthing. We tried all kinds of traps with no luck. We bought the Victor Electronic rat trap from our local hardware store. Have had great success with this product for over 5 years. Average size of rats killed is 8 inches, excluding the tail. Also killed many mice. Have used different bait combinations, incl. manufacturer’s recommended peanut butter (not so good), kitten kibble (somewhat effective), and a buffet combo of aged cheddar cheese bits + walnut pieces + kitten kibble + bacon bits (totally irrisistible).

Most effective procedure to lure and kill rats/mice: (3) Scatter a little bait outside the trap, in front of trap entryway to lead the rat towards the trap.

(4) !!DO NOT TURN ON THE BAITED TRAP FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS!! so the rats will assume this new source of food is safe for them. Be generous with the bait this first couple of days.

(5) On the third day, bait the trap as usual, place it in the exact location as before, and flick the trap’s power switch to “On”. Voila…you should have your first electrocuted dead rat/mouse the next morning. You will know this because the little green light on top of the trap will be blinking on and off or you will see the rat’s tail sticking out of the trap. Turn the switch to “Off”. With gloved hands (disposable nitrile gloves are best), pick up the trap with the rat still inside, open your garbage can, slide the dead rat out of the trap into the garbage can.

EASY, CLEAN, NO MESS, NO CARRION ODOR.

In my northern Calif. rural area known for its organic farming and organic grass-fed cattle, I recycle the electrocuted rats. Dig a small hole one foot deep in an area of my garden that dog can’t get to, bury electrocuted rat, place a few bricks/heavy stones on top of the little rodent grave and Nature takes care of the rest. Recyle. Good for the planet, good for the earth.
