A taste of Anna and 2011 Maps - on the N97

You'll remember that back in February I wrote a detailed article on  Pimping the Nokia N97, in which I went right through the hardware and software steps needed to bring this flawed but classic device up to date and useable in 2011 . Just as a data point for other fans of this form factor and hardware package, here's a small addendum to the feature. With the E7's fixed battery, fixed storage and EDoF camera, maybe the N97 is still more capable for you?

Pimping the Nokia N97 - update

Please make sure you've  read the original  - it's comprehensive!

Mapping

Despite what I was predicting in the original article , Nokia has now released  Ovi Maps 3.6  officially for the N97, via Sw_update, so N97 owners can now also enjoy the full range of geo-guides and POIs, country map downloads, transit lines and improved location and navigation. It's a  killer

The only caveat, as you might expect, is that you have to be careful about not running out of room on disk C:. So remove any previous Maps updates (Settings>Application manager>Installed apps) first. And if you've been right on the limit of disk C:, then maybe your periodic sync/backup and re-build is in order (N97 owners will know all about this... !) before installing Ovi Maps 3.6 over the air.

Anna

Not really Symbian Anna - just a taste of it, thanks to an official Nokia theme in the  Ovi Store: Nokia Evolve , shown in place here. The new icons are slightly larger than the old ones, making them slightly clearer and easier to hit - plus you get an Anna frisson every time you bring up the Symbian menu. Nokia Evolve is an official theme and very efficient - unlike many third party themes it won't slow the N97 down or cause visual oddities in some dialogs and screens.

One note for installation though - as always with themes, switch your Ovi Store settings to install to disk C: first, since your mass memory will get locked out every time you hook up to your desktop computer. After installation, switch your Ovi Store settings back to disk E:, don't forget!

RAMBlow and Keylock Clock

In the original article , I recommended two specific always-on utilities. I still swear by RAMBlow on the N97, it runs through RAM every hour or two and terminates running apps which haven't been accessed for a while, adding a little RAM compression sweep into the mix too. Essentially this means that in daily use, my N97 usually has well over 20MB free at any given point. It's vital to toggle 'protection' for the apps that you really do want to keep running though. In my case these are: Podcasting, Music player, Gravity, Home screen, Menu, WidgetUI (inclusion of these last three speeds up the S60 interface).

I'll take up the other position and say go for the 360. I really recommend it if you are a big FPS online player. The 360s success has been primarily built on first person shooters, and it isn't going to stop anytime soon. With it getting Halo Reach this year exclusively, Gears 3 next year, and it gets the dlc packs for Call of Duty first, Microsoft knows where it's hardcore fans lie. The online play is the star with the 360, and now PS3 will be joining the ranks with their pay system. Live really is worth the $50. You can also do like many of us and check Amazon where you can often get Live memberships for $35, or $50 with extras thrown in like extra controllers and headsets. On Live itself they have been offering all kinds of discounts on the service the past few months. Signing up with a free silver account will let you take a look and decide for yourself. My Elite did go belly up a few months ago, was without it for 1.5 - 2 weeks, and got one back for free. I have no complaints, though if it does die again, maybe the excuse for the new design. Also as much as the RRoD rightfully became the big issue, it has calmed down a little bit, and PS3 had it's own yellow light of death for a few, not including occasional brickings for older systems whenever a new update came out. Not even close to the 360 issues, but for some problems did occur. First of all, the Px does not have the Velocity Engine, and OS 10.1/2 uses it. There is a dramatic performance over the G4 (and especially later G3s) with 10.2, as the operating system is now more effeciant. Also, OS X takes advantage of dual processors to a certain degree (maybe an extra 50 percent or so). Finally, when you take a look at the new PowerMacs, you are looking at 4MB of L3 Cache (w/ dual 1.25GHz). The Px don't seem to have that (if any). So, basically, that would bring a 64-bit system (in terms of the P4) to about 4 or 5GHz right there. Now, take a look at the PC. Sure, the PC has incredible boot time, is great for playing games, and has a quick OS. However, the P4 lacks the necessity of an effecient L1 Cache. I do not see how 4Kb will provide enough memory for the complex operations tha Macs can handle. So, instead of a 4.7GHz, you're looking at, maybe, 3.x or 4GHz, assuming, with this new chip, the L1 cache has remained unchanged.
