Bourn, Bourgeois, Crawford still not too far apart

The literal distance separating the Minute Maid Park clubhouses last weekend offered a figurative representation of the proximity Astros outfielders Michael Bourn and Jason Bourgeois and Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford shared during their rearing on the northeast side of Houston.

Each born in Houston during one 16-month stretch from August 1981 to December 1982, Bourgeois, Bourn and Crawford crossed paths playing Little League baseball and followed those paths to the major leagues, an unlikely progression for three men from neighborhoods where distractions were plentiful and competing athletic endeavors revered.

Their synchronized development during a period when baseball nearly vanished from urban communities should serve as the story league executives use to promote its rebirth. That three veterans from similar backgrounds share this stage is a testament to the power of parental involvement, selfless and wise planning, and the lure of the game.

"It's amazing that happened," Crawford said. "For one, when we were growing up we didn't know one person that was in the major leagues. We didn't even know how to get there; we thought that was the hardest thing to do. For all three of us to be there shows, one, what kind of league we were playing in and, two, we all committed to the game of baseball. It just shows how much all three of us really wanted to play baseball."

Smokey Jasper Park was home to abundant untapped potential. Time and circumstance would ultimately dismantle that promise, but when Bourgeois, Bourn and Crawford first started playing with and against one another 20 years ago, the game captivated them. As they matured and bore witness to the power of their collective athleticism, their shared success became addictive. Few teams could match their talent, and as the state championships accumulated within the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association, a confidence blossomed that kept them engaged.

John Bourgeois and Ray Bourn saw to it that their sons got that far. Both volunteered for duty as Little League dads, chauffeuring their kids to games near and far, to countless practices at Smokey Jasper Park as the skills of their sons manifested.
