US Ambassador Greeted With Roses by Syrian Protesters
Later on Friday, Reuters reported that a State Department spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland, confirmed that the ambassador’s car was “surrounded by friendly protesters who were putting flowers on the windshields, they were putting olive branches on the car, they were chanting, ‘Down with the regime.’”
Ms. Nuland confirmed that Mr. Ford drove through the city center on Friday but decided not to stay so as “not to become the story himself” and left before the protests got under way.
On Friday, the news agency’s English-language Web site featured two more articles complaining about the American’s visit and carried the banner headline “Urgent: Thousands gather in Bab Touma in Damascus to reject foreign intervention in Syria and protest the presence of U.S. ambassador in Hama.”
On a section of the news agency’s site dedicated to “The Reality of Events,” a new report headlined “ Interior Ministry: U.S. Ambassador Incites Saboteurs in Hama to More Violence ” explained that a Syrian government statement “pointed out that the U.S. Ambassador met in Hama with a number of the saboteurs and incited them to more violence and protest and to refuse dialogue.”
According to the official news agency, “The statement added that the Ambassador, under the cover of visiting some hospitals, also met with some people in the same framework of inciting more violence and instability and in attempt to sabotage the ongoing national dialogue and deepen discord and sedition among the Syrian people who strongly reject and condemn such foreign instigation.”
Yassin Musharbash, who has been reporting on the protests in Hama for the German magazine Der Spiegel, suggested that the ambassador’s visit to Hama “is important for more than solidarity with [the] opposition. It also means U.S. reckon they don’t have to compromise with Asad regime.”
Blake Hounshell, the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, observed : “The more I think about it, the more extraordinary Ford’s visit to Hama is. When was the last time a U.S. ambassador did something so bold?”
While the security forces apparently did not intervene to stop protesters from gathering in Hama after Friday Prayer, activists said that demonstrators were killed in other parts of the country.
