Crash test a go-go

As it turns out, the Angels' class uniform is dance casual. In other words, come dressed in whatever feels comfortable and lets you move freely. I saw mostly bare feet with the occasional dance sneaker thrown in. Most reassuring of all, the Angels weren't all cookie-cutter editions of the same women. There were tall ladies and short ladies; slender, spritely types and a few curvier editions. The one thing they had in common was that they all moved well, but even then, it was obvious that some have more dance experience than others. As I watched the tail end of their rehearsal, the beginners weren't berated or criticized. Instead, they were encouraged to practice extra and come prepared to learn more next week. Score one for good first impressions.

If you were familiar with the Angels' work in the past, there've been some changes. The brand-new owner, an outgoing, energetic fireball who goes by the single name N'kia (or Anna R. Kiss when onstage), has the Angels practicing new choreography in a new space. There was just enough room in the back of the small studio at Underground Dance Company for we newbies to lurk until it was our turn on the floor. Most of the Angels stuck around for our beginner "workshop," and it was nice to have a crowd to blend into as the choreographer walked us through a basic warm-up.

I never had managed to articulate, or even really form, expectations for what the class would be. Step-by-step instruction on basic go-go moves? But instead of "Step one: Drop it like it's hot," we got an honest-to-goodness go-go routine set to Christina Aguilera's "Burlesque." Later, N'kia explained that the term "go-go" has come to mean dancing to suit whatever's playing in the club, evolving to stay on the cutting edge. So both the music choice and the moves-a funky, hip-hoppy cross between jazz, cheer and bellydance-make sense.

For the rest of the class we rocked out, or in my case fumbled a bit, learning our way through the choreography. Some of the moves came pretty easily to me: I can strut. I can fling my hair around, I can do hip sways, and I can shimmy. I even pulled off a turn or two without falling over or kicking anybody (success!) but I'm not without my stumbling blocks.

Everybody else sank close to the floor and stood up hips-first, in a move that says, "Look at my booty, isn't it cute?" My body language said: "Lift with your legs, not your back." Everyone else nailed another quick move, shaking one upthrust fist in unison with their hips. I looked like I was trying to start a riot.
