Up to her elbows in goopy gak College student get's hands-on experience

Natalie Platzkoester is making a mess of her summer -- and loving every minute of it.

The 21-year-old college student concocted goop, dirt pudding and gak on the first day of Gloppy Sloppy Goop class at Southwestern Illinois College.

After helping 16 young grade-schoolers, one by one, wash sticky goop -- a flour, cornstarch water, food color mix -- from their hands, she announced, "We are going to make mud pies with worms in them."

"Are they gummy worms?" asked someone in front.

"I am not going to feed you guys real worms," said Natalie.

"I ate a cricket," said Will Parks.

"What's the chocolate stuff?" asked Skylar Hunter, of Belleville.

"Pudding."

"I am hungry."

"We are going to crush up Oreos and put them in your pudding," continued Natalie, a blue rag hanging from her bluejeans back pocket. "You have to eat your pie with your hands."

"I love Oreos," said Allie Zipfel, 6.

"Can I eat this broken piece of cookie?"

"My worm is sinking."

Six-year-old Spencer Tebbe, of Breese, lifted a bowl and sucked down his pudding.

"It's good," he said. "I usually have a spoon, but there's no spoon. It's really, really hard to lick it out."

Teacher Natalie, patient, laid back and unflappable, answered questions, helped wash 16 pairs of hands, cleaned up messes and managed to complete three goopy projects in a three-hour period.

When she's not up to her elbows in goop, she's applying Band-Aids and getting sprayed with a water gun at Cathedral's summer daycare program. If that's not enough, she baby-sits the kids she sees all day.

"My siblings and I do tag-team baby-sitting," said Natalie.

Her aunt Carol Platzkoester, who teaches a cats and dogs class at SWIC, taught third grade at Cathedral. Natalie's mom Cheryl coached volleyball there.

"I grew up around Mom dealing with kids," she said. "I'd go to my aunt's room after school.

"I just like kids. The best part is when they are the messiest and smile and have fun."

The gloppy, sloppy goop kids read books about ooey- gooey stuff, made play-dough, sand dough (cement for kids), putty, slime and glue, mixed their own paints, and dyed rice, then created pictures.

Natalie, an elementary ed major at Lindenwood University, got the job teaching the popular class in early spring. She had experience from working at Cathedral's after-school program. She was already an old hand at goop and gak.

When they put a H1b restriction for TARP companies it was passed uniamously. So if we need EB reform just we need to disassociate or take neutral stand on H1b. They cannot remove H1b as it was with WTO. I always wonder why give GC to 50k people regardless of their education experience and harass the 65K master degree/highly skilled tech worker ? All anti immigration group target H1B but rarely I see any opposition to GC lottery. It seems to me that due to media ( lou was one big guy ) has painted the H1B as the biggest enemy of job loss which is not true. @fide-champ i have tried options that could be open to me till the brink and believe u me if they were there i would be the first to grab it, i have tried attorneys, i have tried references, i have tried many options , given 15 interviews of companies and sat on that interview table from 9 to 5:30 PM , but only after realizing that it wasnt going anywhere and i had blown my dough i realized , its better that i leave. If a company is willing to hire you for an available position, they can still hire you and file a I-129 with consular processing option, just like your current H1. Once thats approved, you will have to appear for a VISA interview again in your home country (at the consulate mentioned on your application). Whether you will be given a VISA or not will depend on the documentary evidence submitted and your H1 history.
