Live Wire: Deterring squirrel traffic not easy
Q: Please tell me how to get rid of squirrels in a good way. There are dozens and dozens in my backyard, and they don't even run when I go out anymore. - H.S., Fayetteville
A: If you're feeling it's a little too squirrelly out there - or a lot too squirrelly - you might want to talk to someone who can deal with the critters for you.
First, though, consider doing what you can on your own to make your yard a less squirrel-friendly place.
For example, if they're jumping on your roof, trim any limbs that are serving as their highways so they're at least six to eight feet away from the house.
If they're chomping through the food you put out for the birds, wildlife officials say, consider providing wiring or nailing an ear of corn to a tree or wooden fence post that's away from the bird feeder - or, we say, consider laying off the birdseed for a while.
You might be able to discourage some squirrels with repellents made from hot peppers or the urine of predators such as foxes or coyotes - but don't count on it. Moth balls won't likely work for long, either.
At that point, if it's still Squirrel Central outside, you might to want to talk to someone who can help you deal with them, either by trapping and relocating them or by.... well, you know.
Some pest-control companies handle nuisance animals, as well as bugs. Look for them in the yellow pages. Or contact a wildlife damage control agent. To see the names and numbers of such agents in the area, go to ncwildlife.org and click on "nuisance wildlife," then on "contact a wildlife damage control agent."
These agents are certified by the state but work for themselves. So expect to pay a fee.
You can also consult the local office of the N.C. Cooperative Extension at 321-6860. Or check ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/wild/pdf/ wildlife/TREE_ SQUIRRELS.PDF.
Q: I have old Ladies Home Journal magazines from the early 1900s, and they're in good condition. How can I find out if they are worth anything and who might be interested in them? - C.C., Fayetteville
A: Your best bet may be eBay.
But prepare to be disappointed. A number of vintage LHJs were up for sale at the online auction site when we checked, but few had drawn bids. Maybe you'll be luckier.
We'd also suggest reading the tips about buying and selling vintage magazines at this website - magforum.com/ collecting_magazines.htm. It'll give you a sense of the magazine collecting market and how sales on eBay can go.
