Ottawa University Announces Appointment of Dean for New School of Education

OTTAWA, Kan. (July 7, 2011) - Ottawa University today announced the appointment of Dr. David M. Barnes as the dean of its newly created School of Education. In that post, he will be responsible for fulfilling Ottawa University's plan to build a nationally recognized education program offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Barnes comes to Ottawa University from Arizona Christian University (formerly Southwestern College) in Phoenix where he served as executive vice president and founding dean of the School of Adult Learning. He brings nearly two decades of experience in higher education teaching, leadership, and community relations, as well as experience in healthcare, church leadership, and corporate operations. Barnes' experience includes both traditional and non-traditional education environments, strategic planning, enrollment management, accreditation, fund raising, external relations, marketing, and new program development in undergraduate and graduate programs."The mission of the University of Ottawa is to prepare our students to lead lives of significance in their professions, their communities and their relationships," said University of Ottawa President Kevin C. The appointment of Barnes is the third high-profile appointment for Ottawa University in the past three months. In May, the university announced the appointment of Dr. Russ McCullough as its Wayne Angell Chair of Economics. In April, the university announced that Dr. Kirk Wessel would serve as the first dean of Ottawa University's newly created school of business. All three appointments are part of Ottawa University's plan to significantly expand its commitment to the fields of education and business. Though Ottawa University has offered both undergraduate and graduate degrees in these fields for decades, Eichner has made the reorganization and expansion of those offerings a focus of his long-term vision for the university.
