Royal wedding party, tiara reminders to add sparkle to life
Just in case you ever wondered, keeping your tiara on the dashboard of your car is not the best idea.
There are times when the sun hits the diamond at the right angle, leaving you momentarily blinded - not good when you're merging into interstate traffic.
There is also a good chance if you ever have to come to a stop in your car, as on the spot the ice cream truck, you could be injured by one of those things pointed tiara.
I know this because I was driving around with my crown on the dashboard for a while now. A catapult, too, which is probably just as dangerous. My 14-year-old son made it at camp this summer, and he'll be the first to tell you it may not be structurally sound. Apparently, he didn't grasp the nuts and bolts of, well, nuts and bolts.
Occasionally, it occurs to me these things could possibly be a little hard to explain on an accident report.
The reason for the catapult is simple: I've told my son a hundred times to take it into the house. He says sure, but then promptly forgets, and I'll be darned if I'm going to put one more thing of his away. So there it sits.
As for the tiara, it's from my brief stint as a princess.
It began with an invitation to Britain's royal wedding from a friend. Sure, the royal party was to be held at her house just across town, rather than "across the "pond," as the British like to say. And we'd watch tape-delayed festivities rather than watching it live. Still, it's not like everyday one gets a royal invite.
I arrived late, coming from a middle school track meet. I let myself in the front door, and then followed a trail of flower petals through the entryway, down the winding stairs, and into a room brimming with white helium-filled balloons.
Upon each arrival, a royal trumpet sounded, but since I was late, apparently the "royal trumpeter" had skipped off to play videogames.
A tiara was placed on my head as I picked out my "engagement" ring. I went for the biggest bling I could find, something I didn't do for my real engagement ring, opting instead for something "simple." What was I thinking? This time I went for huge and gaudy.
There were wedding napkins, wedding mints and real china. There was even the tossing of the bridal bouquet, which I did not catch. This was fine by me because, frankly, the idea of planning a wedding again sounds exhausting, which I'm sure my husband will be happy to hear.
