Rob Dyrdek: An exclusive interview
Rob Dyrdek is arguably the biggest name in skateboarding today. Before partnering up with Jackass director Jeff Tremaine to create the hit reality TV show Rob & Big that made Dyrdek a household name, only core skateboarding aficionados knew Dyrdek as one of skateboarding's premiere riders.
The thing is, while most people who know of Dyrdek these days know him for his comedic antics and freestyle lyrics on his reality TV shows, there's something else about Dyrdek that many people don't know, yet should know.
Dyrdek can skate. Really skate.
Dyrdek was born and raised in Kettering, Ohio, where he started skateboarding at the age of 12. Dyrdek quickly made a name for himself as a skateboarding phenom, skipping his senior year of high school to become a professional skateboarder and founding the Alien Workshop skateboard team. Shortly thereafter he moved to San Diego, where he joined the DC Shoes skateboarding team and quickly became one of the top street skateboarders in the world.
It wasn't until Rob & Big however that Dyrdek reached mainstream success. Dyrdek has since gone on to create multiple reality television programs, numerous skateboarding companies, and founded Street League , which has quickly become the premier competitive skateboarding association.
I caught up with Dyrdek to talk about his beginnings in skateboarding, how he hooked up with director Jeff Tremaine, his first associations with Christopher "Big Black" Boykin, why Big Black has been missing from Dyrdek's reality TV shows the past few years, what became of Mini Horse, his relationship with DC Shoes, who he considers to be the greatest skateboarder ever, the creation of his Fantasy Factory, his current dating scene, and why Street League has quickly become the model of success for the future of all competitive action sports leagues.
Cyrus : How are you doing Rob?
Dyrdek : Thank you very much for having me. I'm glad we could make it happen all these years later after Myspace.
(To catch the readers up on what Rob means by that, one of my assistants tried to pursue Rob through Myspace years ago, back when Myspace was still relevant).
Cyrus : Just to show how cool you are, unlike being the standard douche who says, "Talk to my publicist," you gave my old assistant your personal phone number, but he dropped the ball and never made it happen.
Dyrdek : But did he, or did I just screen him? Was I just cool enough to give him my number but never picked up the call?
