NFP On Campus

Fifty-six days until the first college football Saturday of the 2011 season. It’s getting closer…

But, for now, let’s open up the college notebook and see what’s happening on campuses across the country.

Ohio State meets with the NCAA

On Friday, Ohio State responded to the allegations made by the NCAA against its football program. And, to be quite honest, the Buckeyes weren't very harsh in their self-imposed punishment.

With the school scheduled to with the NCAA Committee on Infractions next month, Ohio State vacated its wins from the 2010 season, which was the obvious move by school president E. Gordon Gee. But the program failed to take away scholarships and did not ban itself from postseason play. Placing itself on two years’ probation? Hardly a bold statement.

Was a self-imposed bowl ban expected? No, it wasn’t. But Gee and the administration could have made a bold move by taking the initiative given everything that has occurred within the program — a poor job by the compliance department heading the list of errors.

The Buckeyes did very little Friday that would harm the program moving forward, and I’m not sure that was the best approach to take because the NCAA is going to want to make a statement in this case.

Ohio State clearly felt that dismissing Jim Tressel was punishment enough for its violations.

While the NCAA rulebook is full of loopholes and ambiguity, former head coach Jim Tressel was guilty of violating Bylaw 10.1 (unethical conduct). And he flat-out fielded ineligible players last year. Yet OSU played it safe on Friday, and I don’t see how the NCAA doesn’t look at this as a slap in the face.

Pretty smooth move by the administration in getting Tressel to essentially assume all the blame, as he did in his response to the NCAA , eh?

While firing Tressel and suspending the Buckeye Five (now the Buckeye Four after Pryor’s departure) could be viewed as punishment enough, keep in mind that those measures had to take place. But there needed to be a cherry on top, so to speak.

The Buckeyes didn’t provide that on Friday.

Next month, the NCAA will do it for them.

Another nonconference test for the Hokies

Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech never met a big game they didn’t like.

Since the schedule was announced, I have said that this is an unwinnable game, and that's when Jim Tressel was supposed to be coaching in it. In the worst-case scenario, the Buckeyes are looking at 3-3 after six games, but is that really all that far

Buckeye Football Schedule for 2013-2014 Announced | Our Honor Defend

The Big Ten Conference announced the 2013-2014 football schedules today. Ohio State also announced the addition of Vanderbilt as the 2013 season opener.

The 2013 season will open with the Buckeyes facing President Gordon Gee’s previous employer in Ohio Stadium on August 31st. This will be the first regular season game between the Buckeyes and an SEC opponent since they face LSU in 1988. The other non-conference game that has been confirmed for the 2013 season is a September 14th game at California. That leaves two games that still need to be scheduled, one of which should be the annual game against an in-state foe. Ohio State will open Big Ten play on September 28th when they host Wisconsin. The other conference home games are against Iowa, Penn State and Indiana. The Buckeyes will hit the road against Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan. With the new format for Big Ten schedules each conference team will have two bye weekends during conference play. Ohio States are nicely placed, with the byes occurring on October 12th (before the Iowa game) and on November 9th (serving as a nice late season rest for the team).

The 2014 season opens with the Buckeyes traveling to Baltimore to face Navy on August 30th before returning home for games against Cincinnati, Kent State, and Virgina Tech. OSU gets a bye during the first weekend of Big Ten action (September 27th) before beginning conference play by hosting Purdue. The conference schedule flips the sites of the 2013 games, with Northwestern, Illinois, and Michigan also coming to Columbus while the Buckeyes travel to Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, and Indiana. The Buckeyes do not fare so well with the location of the bye weekends in 2014 with the other bye occuring on October 11th, the week after the Purdue game. This means that OSU will have only 1 game in a three week span and then will close the season with seven straight games, you would think that the Big Ten schedule makers would do a better than this.

It is hard to truly gauge the difficulty of these schedules at this point as the top teams in the conference can definitely change in two years. Assuming the strengths of the opponents remain similar to what they are today, then 2013 should be a much easier season than 2014. 2013 will see three of our four most difficult conference opponents coming to Columbus (Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State) with the only difficult road games being at Michigan and at Cal. In 2014 the Buckeyes will have to travel to Madison, Iowa City, and Happy Valley as well as facing VT at home, which is a more difficult non-con game than a trip to Cal. Both seasons should be easier than 2011/2012 as Nebraska and Michigan State fall off the schedule, yes I am actually saying that it is easier to not have to face Sparty but Dantonio’s arrival in East Lansing has their program on a major upswing.
